Cost-efficient service for overhaul cylinder liner in-situ
Our Service department has expanded its machining capability with a Wavecut Grinding Machine (WGM) from Chris-Marine. This portable machine is easily brought to your vessel or location to re-profile the wave cut bore whilst the liner is still installed in the engine.
Extending the service life
The new Wavecut Grinding Machine re-establishes the wavecut profile in scuffed cylinder liners for the following MANB&W 2-stroke cylinder liners, 80, 90 and 98 MC, MC-C. The first Wave cut grinding in situ was carried out by MANB&W Copenhagen on the container vessel “New York”. Up to now more than 100 cylinder liners, for marine engines, in the size 90 and 98 cm bore have been wave cut.
Fast and cost-effective machine on site
Cylinder liners with surface defects are not worn to the limit, may be saved by the application of a new wave cut profile. Wave cutting gives a considerably higher success rate for re-use of the liner, compared with our former honing recommendation. In the past, re-grinding had to be carried out in the workshop, meaning a costly engine strip down and transportation. However, thanks to the portability and accuracy of the WGM, it is possible to work on board the vessel with the cylinder liner in situ. The machining operation typically takes as little as 10 hours.
