Recently MAN B&W issued Service Letter SL01-394/CBO with reference to the pneumatic components as an examination of various marine incidents, recorded and filed by the Service Department. It has shown that one of the main causes of problems with starting and manoeuvring systems is founded in insufficient maintenance of the pneumatic control system of the engine, including the air supply for this system.
In general, suppliers of pneumatic components recommend renewing of the non-metallic parts and o-rings in the various valves every two years.
Referring to the components and the condition of the pneumatic valves we would like to introduce our service for a complete function test and inspection of the pneumatic valves in a short period, i.e. during port stay. This inspection results in a full report and overview of the condition of the pneumatic valves and components.
As the modern MC engine reverses with the roller guides shifting, which is achieved by pneumatic air cylinders, the most common problem occurs because of hardened seals in the air cylinders.
Testing of the manoeuvring system is done in three steps: testing of the condition of the emergency stand; testing of engine room control and testing of bridge control. After dismantling of several valves, the non-metallic parts and o-rings are inspected.
MAN Diesel Benelux has the knowledge and skills to solve most of your manoeuvring problems when related to pneumatic systems. We check the condition of your system and advice on repair. The required components can be made available at short notice.
